Movie Review - The Book of Eli

Finally got around to watching this one and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

Synopsis in a nutshell. Set in a post apocalyptic world, where most of the people who remember what the good book represents have gone, nomade Eli (Denzel Washington) is charged with delivering the last remaning Bible to where it will be safe. On his journey Eli encounters survivor Carnegie (Gary Oldman), who not only remembers the Bible he remembers the power it can have over people and so plans to use it as a weapon to help expand his small empire. The action hots up once Carnegie relises stranger Eli has the book he has been searching so hard for. The obligatory heroin here is Solaris (Mila Kunis) who follows Eli when he leave's the town controlled by Carngie at the request of her mother who believes she will be safer with him.

The story was more substantial than anticipated and so held my attention more than I expected it to and i'm very pleased to report that the post-apocalyptic world portrayed was not just a simple re-hash of the mad max world but a well thought out creation.

There's a subtle but obvious message in this film pointing to what could happen in light of todays world with the very real threats that face us. As the viewer you're never told why the world is in the state it is but it's clear nuclear weapons is a likely suspect. The story deals with some interesting question like, what happens when all that knowledge is lost, not just big things like 'how to split the atom?' but small things like local knowledge such as where the nearest water source is located. I came away thinking about just how import knowledge and history is and how, history especially, is under appreciated. I love a good thought provoking story.

As expected Denzel's action scenes are bad ass. They are gruesome but they are shot in a very slick way which means they aren't gratuitous, his characters fighting style is very quick and clean, reminecient of Christian Bale's character in Equilibrium, very entertaining.

Here's my summary..

The Good: Good premise, great cast/acting & kick ass action.

The Bad: Would have liked to have seen more of Denzel kicking ass and the story padded out some more. But a sign of a good movie is one that leaves you wanting more.

The Ugly: Denzel with a razor sharp knife...awesome too.

I especially liked the biblical connotations in the film, likening Eli's pilgrimage of faith to that of a disciple or that of Jesus himself. Another nice touch, but kind of obvious thinking back, was a clever little plot twist revealed at the end.

Overall i'm giving it a 4/5.

As always please comment bellow.

Peace

Miniature Video's by Sam O'Hare

Check out these video's by Sam O'Hare. In both cases they look visual stunning and with simply sublime editing to work with the soundtrack. Such great pics for the music btw.

All the elements mash together to make truly beautiful video. I could watch these over and over

New TV show: Leverage

September is the best time for TV show fans. It's about not where your favourite show begin their newest season and where new project launch their first season. I've been on the look out for some new show to watch and have found one, it goes by the name Leverage

The series is about a team of top criminals lead by Nathan Ford (played by Timothy Hutton), who previously was the man best at chasing these people down as an insurance investigator. Each of the team has an area of expertise i.e. Acrobatics, tech, fighting and grifting all the usual suspect's you would expect to find. Each of the team have always worked alone which is where Nathan comes in. He is the boss man for 2 reasons. 1. He is the only 'honest' one among them to make sure no one gets any funny ideas. 2. He is the only one who knows what each one is capable making him the best man to come up with the plan, plus he's seen it all. Let me introduce you to the rest of the team:

  • Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman): The beautiful and sophisticated con-woman capable of pulling the wool over anyone's eye.
  • Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane): Provides the action, when it's time to get physical he's your man. Plays this part very well. He acts the tough guy but has a soft side.
  • Parker (Beth Riesgraf): Take care of the wire work, spends a lot of the time zip wiring down buildings and crawling through air vents. She also clearly has a few issues to deal with.
  • Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge): Bring the light hearted humor to the show. He the man with all the gizmos and gadgets and there's nothing he can't do with a computer and an internet connection. I can see Alec and Eliot will be my favourite characters.

Season 4 has just begun in America but here in sunny England channel one (formerly Virgin 1) has just started season 1. I've just got done watching episode 1 of the first season and so far I'm impressed. I love watching TV/film's with a crime caper premise the more and this show has a bit of everything; humor, action clever plan's and its not too serious.

Fan of Hustle, the Oceans movies or even misson impossible I think you'll like the series. I myself will defiantly be watching more episods, I have a feeling it will get even better.

Feel free to leave a comment on what you think of the show bellow, it would be good to get your thoughts on it.

Don't go changin'

Blog - We've REACHed the end of the road

Today should be a great day for me. I am a massive Halo fan. I say it loud, I say it proud. The creation of the Halo Universe was as big to me as the birth of Star Wars was to fans back in the day. Master Chief is my Luke Skywalker.

Today is the launch of Bungie's final installment of their Halo series, which returns to the time just before the 1st game where we see the fall of the planet Reach. We know how it ends but the game tells the
story of how Reach fell and the final stand Earth and more importantly Noble Team made against the Covenant.

For every successive launch of the Halo games I've been all over it like white in rise. I book time off from work, pre-order the limited edition version of the game then head down and queue up with the other
Halo head cases for the midnight launch, take my copy along with a 4 pack of Relentless and other assorted gaming snacks home and spend the few days kicking ass and taking names in my favorite place from home.

But this time my fight against the convent will be different, it will
be a sad affair, as this is the last game Bungie will be making under the Halo banner. So, as I slaughter any convent scum that comes my way I'll know I'm one step closer to the end of my time in the Halo Universe. I'll be picking up my copy later tonight and with a Relentless in hand and a tear I'm my eye I'll fight the evil covenant one last time and say fair well to my comrades, my solders, my friends.

Halo forever baby!!!!!
